When to drop from 2 to 1 nap…

I’m working with a really lovely family who are at this stage. My usual advice is that its approximately 18 months old that they move from 2 to 1 nap. However, its not a linear process.

Often, children may seem like they may only need one nap when they are 12 months old, when they start to fight the afternoon nap. In fact, this could be due to the 12 month sleep regression.

In which case, if your child is fighting the afternoon nap at 12 months, then only give them one nap, but reinstate the afternoon nap after 2/3 weeks.

At around 18 months, if your child can stay awake happily until 12 o’clock, then they are ready for one nap. If they are grumpy before 12, then keep the morning nap, but cap it at 45/30/15 minutes. If your child sleeps longer in the morning, then this will affect their lunchtime nap, and ultimately they will be overtired by bed time.
